Re: Jimmy Greaves was SHIT
What people seem not to take on board is that the standard in the PL is a step change higher than the old first division back in the sixties. Aside from the likes of Moore, Hurst Peters the rest of our usual elevens back then would be struggle to hold their own in any of today's lower order PL teams.

Re: Jimmy Greaves was SHIT
Incredible isn't it that we had players like Hurst, Byrne, Greaves and the rest when you had a Manager, Trainer and possibly a Kit Man whereas now with a backroom staff of seemingly hundreds along with sports scientists and the useless pro zone we don't produce players half as good. As Sir Trev once said with someone overloading him with passing stats is "how many of those passes went forward?"

It pains me today when all the natural ability and cockiness is coached out of players for the "good" of the team. Look at how players like Barkley and Wilshire just go down hill because they have to play in a system. I can just imagine managers of today asking Jimmy Greaves to track back or even worse play on the wing. Look at Joe Cole, shoehorned into a system rather than play a system built around a talent like that. Then you see managers writing things down, I mean FFS if you can't remember what's gone on in 45 mins for crying out loud. Ron Greenwood said all you need to be a good coach is a pair of eyes!!

Rant over!!!!

True Zico. If you youtube England 1964 you can see plenty of footage with Greaves & Byrne as the main England strikers. Not sure if he was still with Palace then.

Re: Jimmy Greaves was SHIT
Wasn't a bad replacement was he?! Seem to remember Budgie Byrne could have been a fourth Hammer in that team if it hadn't been for injury.

Re: Jimmy Greaves was SHIT
Indeed Zico just all pure destiny. There hasn't been a World Cup Final to match it since.

Mind you if you watch Geoff in old footage you see what great player he was too. Intelligent running, held the ball well bringing others into play, great header of a ball and a record of just about a goal every other game.

Re: Jimmy Greaves was SHIT
In one of the 50 year World Cup programmes he suggested that he was in fact still injured for the Final but in another programme he suggested he could have played if picked so not sure which is the truth. Funny how things turn out. Can't imagine history without a Geoff Hurst hat trick, and that only happened because we conceded a last minute goal!! Doubt 2-1 would have had the same mystique to it!

Anyone who was at the Swansea game would mention the difference when Lanzini came on.
A player who could control the ball and have a picture in his head as to what he was trying to do when faced with a defender.
Was like switching a light on and a shocking contrast to what had gone before.

Re: Jimmy Greaves was SHIT
Whats evident from the various clips of him back in the day is that he was extremely gifted with both feet. He could smash it with both feet as well as place it and could head the ball well too.

The pitches were often lumpy bogs and dead but still he could dribble at pace, control the ball and finish. Love the clip though.

Zico

Yeah Lanzini did that last game. Let the ball do some work then control it.

I know mate, the technique back then seemed to be far better than it is now. When I used to coach kids, (a long time ago now) I used to try and do little routines where they received the ball side on and let it run past them (like Sir Trev) and also little drills just using their lesser foot. It amazes me today about how many players control the ball to a stop before proceeding. No wonder so many teams look slow and ponderous.

Cyril Knowles the bloody Yid but scored some decent goals.

Re: Jimmy Greaves was SHIT
Was at the recent '75 reunion Zico when old footage was being played in the background.

Something very noticeable was how there was very little playing square passes at the back, the ball was moved forward very quickly. Pop was once praised about his goalscoring ability but his reply was he found it easy as he often had 8 or 9 chances per match. Plenty of games you go to now where there are not that amount of chances in total. Could be wrong but I don't suppose there were 5 chances (in total) in the Swansea match.

Re: Jimmy Greaves was SHIT
So Greavsie had an off day, didn't happen very often or maybe he was thinking about the post match piss up with Sir Bob?

Anyway, nice one Cyril, do you remember him?

zico 1:36 Sun Oct 8
Re: Jimmy Greaves was SHIT
Probably his biggest achievement is how he beat the bottle as not many high profile seem to be able to do that. How these guys managed to play on those pitches at all is beyond me. Can you imagine Greavsie and Sit Trev on the bowling lawns they play on now?! Plus when I watch these old clips it's interesting how goalkeepers used to actually catch shots rather than endlessly palm them away like they do now.

Re: Jimmy Greaves was SHIT
He knew it too.

I saw him interviewed years ago and he said something like:

"If you ask Chelsea fans when my best playing days were they'll tell you it was with Chelsea, I you ask Spurs fans when my best playing days were they'll tell you it was with Spurs, and if you ask West Ham fans when my best playing days were they'll tell you it was with Chelsea."

Saw him make his debut for us and yes obviously coming to the end of his career but he certainly knew where the goal was !!

When football belonged to the working man.

Re: Jimmy Greaves was SHIT
Was our top striker and played in the 3 group games in '66 but got injured. Hurst came in and the rest is history as they say.

Didn't know that he had a 4 month old child who died of pneumonia.....how tragic.
